Many of the pieces I own in my closet are extremely versatile. When I shop, I shop for things that can be worn many times and in many different ways. I search for things based on color and versatility. I like for my clothes to last a lifetime and each outfit I wear to make a statement. Some people think they are shopping smart, but are they really? When you shop, what's the first thing that attracts you to an item?
For me, the very first thing that attracts me is the color. Then comes the print, if it has one. Lastly, the shape/style of it. I need pieces to jump out at me when I am shopping. When it comes to color, it has to be a bold, bright and an interesting color that I love, don't have, or just find very enticing. When it comes to the print, I love quirky, ethnic and bold prints. I look for prints that stand out and can be mixed with other prints. I love small prints on my clothing, however, I do love loud, big prints on bottoms (skirts, pants, jeans). When it comes to the shape/style of an item, it all depends on the type of article I'm looking at. If it's a top, I want to find something that will be super flattering and have a slightly different shape to it than a regular t-shirt or basic button-down blouse. I need something that has a cool length, sleeve detail, or something that just looks completely different from other tops in my closet. However, when it comes to bottoms, I look for things that will fit perfectly on my waist, since I'm so skinny. Also, I look for something that has a cool new detail you wouldn't see on an everyday basis.
With this particular outfit, it's all in the versatility of this shirt dress. Today, I decided to wear it as a dress. To start, IT HAS POCKETS! Pockets are the deal breaker for me when it comes to buying dresses, and this one had hidden pockets. The great thing about this dress is that it is like a basic button down so I can easily pair it with some jeans and a cute shoe, creating a completely different look. I also like the fullness of the sleeves and bodice, making the top very breathable and comfortable. Lastly, the fact that it is black and white, with a cute little floral print makes this top super easy to pair with anything in my closet.
Next time you go out shopping, think about what you already own and what you need. Think about what you are missing that would’ve made that one outfit you wore two days ago stand out. Think about the styles you wish you had. Think about those outfits that are missing the key piece and then start your journey.
